The Chinese economy has grown at a dizzying pace in the last three decades. Since Deng Xiaoping became the Paramount Leader of the People’s Republic of China in 1978, the Chinese economy has undergone major reforms making it a ‘Socialist Market Economy’- a model that has been globally unique. Economic reforms undertaken by Deng were distinctive, controlled centrally, yet opened up the Chinese market to the outside world. This radical reformation set the foundation for China’s bid to become an economic superpower in decades to follow. Results of the seeds sown by Deng are visible today as China has become the second-largest economy in the world. It is predicted to overtake U.S.A as the largest in years to come. The rise of China as an economic powerhouse has caused ripples across the globe as many countries have become dependent on the Chinese market. This places China in a position of great responsibility. As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility.
It has become essential to have a deep understanding of global and regional economic trends from a Chinese perspective. Such a study is also critical for India as it faces several economic challenges vis-a-vis China. This forms the backdrop for the conference that is to be jointly organised by the Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) and the Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA).
The conference aims to provide a platform for academicians and students who are deeply interested in studying China’s economy and present research papers in line with the theme of the conference. The papers presented at the conference will be subsequently published jointly by C3S and LIBA.
